Introduction
Water
resources and their importance
World-wide,
the growing demand of water supply, combined with the limited water
deposits and their irregular spatial and temporal distribution,
often lead to serious problems with social and economical consequences.
At the same time, the degradation of water quality by human activities
makes these problems more and more difficult. Consequently, in many
countries a high priority is placed on the design and management
of works and projects for the development and protection of inland
and seawaters.
In order to
face successfully the continuously growing problems in Greece and
in other countries, it is necessary to provide further specialization
to engineers and scientists and to promote further research in the
related scientific fields.
Contribution
of the NTUA
The National
Technical University of Athens, aiming to upgrade its already important
contribution to education, research and the support of the country's
development, has designed and implemented since September 1998,
an Inter-department Program of Post-graduate Studies (IPPS) in Water
Resources Science and Technology (WRST).
The IPPS operates
under the administrative support of the School of the Civil Engineering
of the NTUA, and in collaboration with the Schools of Rural and
Surveying Engineering, Mining and Metallurgical Engineering and
Applied Mathematics and Physics.
The IPPS is
addressed to recent graduates of NTUA and other Technical Universities
in Greece and abroad, as well as to University graduates in natural
and applied sciences. It is also addressed to engineers and scientists
working in the public or private sector in subjects related to the
content of the program.
The IPPS leads
to a post-graduate diploma of specialization (PDS) after at least
one full year of studies. Those who are interested can continue
their studies for a PhD Degree in one of the collaborating Schools.
Structure
of the program
The post-graduate program "Water Resources Science and Technology" offers 36 compulsory or elective courses (as shown in the last pages). The compulsory courses are divided into three streams (A: Hydrology and Environmental Water Resources Management, B: Water Quality and Environmental Technology, C: Coastal Zone Management), from which each student chooses one. For the completion of studies for the PDS, the attendance and successful examination in, at least, eight courses (four of which in the selected stream) as well as a post-graduate thesis, are required. Courses are given during two terms of four months each, namely the winter term (October-January) and the spring term (February-May), while the post-graduate thesis can be carried out during the summer term (June-September).
Teaching takes place in the buildings of the Zografou campus, and it is undertaken by members of the NTUA faculty and other specialized scientists.
The program is currently funded by the Ministry of Education and internal funds. There are no tuition fees for citizens of EU member states.
Administration
of the program
The IPPS is administered
by a Special Inter-department Committee (SIC), consisting of eleven
members, representatives of the four collaborating Schools of the
NTUA. The director of the IPPS is Professor Th. Xanthopoulos, rector
of NTUA. The SIC decides on the program of studies, the procedure
and criteria of selection of the post-graduate students and all other
details of the educational procedures, within the framework of the
existing legislation and the decisions of the NTUA Senate.
Application
forms
Those interested in the attendance of the program are called to submit an application (in a special form) to the registration office of the Program, located at the N.T.U.A. campus, New Wing of Hydraulics Bldg, 5 Heroon Polytechniou str., Zografou. The application shall be accompanied by an official copy of their Degree, (or evidence of graduation), an academic transcript, proof of knowledge of a foreign language, a curriculum vitae and two references, as shown in the relevant call for application. Applicants whose mother tongue is not Greek should demonstrate that they have adequate knowledge of the Greek language.
